Strengthening identity

The evolution of the Moroccan community residing abroad is shaped by intergenerational transformations and social changes specific to host countries. New expectations are emerging among younger generations of Moroccan origin. While these expectations vary by country and age group, they converge around a shared goal: strengthening the sense of national belonging in all its linguistic, cultural, and regional diversity, along with a commitment to an open and tolerant Islam.

Aware of these challenges, the competent authorities deploy various programs and activities throughout the year for this category of citizens, both in Morocco and in host countries.

  • In Morocco, initiatives include cultural stays Organised by the Hassan II Foundation in favor of children of Moroccans residing abroad for children of Moroccan residents abroad aged 9 to 13, opportunities for community members to take part in official ceremonies in coordination with Moroccan diplomatic and consular missions, and annual cultural universities—held since 2009—designed for students aged 18 to 25.
  • In host countries, efforts include the establishment of Moroccan cultural centers to enrich the cultural offerings available to Moroccans worldwide and promote Moroccan heritage on the international stage. Additionally, cultural days are regularly organized in partnership with relevant ministries and institutions, highlighting Morocco’s civilizational and artistic legacy while fostering its visibility and influence within host societies
  • In the field of education, an ambitious program has been launched to teach Arabic and Moroccan culture to children of the diaspora, with the goal of fostering stronger cultural identity and supporting the integration of younger generations of Moroccans residing abroad

These initiatives aim to preserve the cultural identity of young Moroccans abroad, strengthen their connection to Morocco, and encourage their engagement as active citizens.
